Planet-Friendly

At SweetpeaPunkinRose Designs, sustainability is at the heart of what we do.

Guided by five key strategies established by the Craft Industry Alliance, we’ve adopted practices to minimize our environmental impact, detailed below. We welcome your suggestions to help us continuously enhance our commitment to sustainability.

Choose upcycled or recycled materials and packaging:

  • Every SweetPeaPunkinRose apron lining is from a thrift shop. They are each an upcycled sheet. About one-third of our thread is from thrift shops. Our mailers, if not eco-friendly, are from thrift stores.

  • SweetPeaPunkinRose Designs uses cotton or cotton blend fabrics from thrift shops in Paris (France), Texas, and Washington.  Most of our fabrics are purchased directly from New York, Kentucky, Texas, and Washington retail stores. Roughly one quarter of our fabrics are “Oeko-Tex” fabrics. We continue to work on finding ways to increase our eco friendly practices. We sincerely invite you to send us your ideas and/or resources.

  • SweetPeaPunkinRose Designs takes fabric scraps to recycling services.  Pieces that are the size of my palm are taken to the local recycling service becuase that is what they will accept. Larger pieces are kept for smaller SweetPeaPunkinRose projects or donated to thrift shops. The smallest scraps are taken to special fabric recycling stations that use them for punching bag stuffing as well as other products. *I have been working on designs that utilize these very small scraps. I’ll post my successes.

  • SweetPeaPunkinRose fabric labels are from “Bags of Love”. They are biodegradable and conform to BSI, PAS 9017:2020 biodegradability of polyolefins. (www.polymaterial.com) per the information on their products and on their website.

Encourage a circular economy via supply-swapping:

  • SweetPeaPunkinRose Designs networks with other craftspeople who can use larger pieces of fabric.  However, most of our fabric is used on other SweetPeaPunkinRose Designs in development.   We donate larger pieces to non-profits who need supplies for their services and projects.

Source in a lower-impact way:

  • Increasingly, eco-friendly fabrics are growing (slowly). There is a recommended certification of products (including fabrics) that help others source in lower-impact ways. The certification is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Okeo-Tex is another company that follows the production of Cotton and will stamp fabrics with their brand if it meets their standards. About 1/4 of our fabrics are stamped with Okeo-Tex.

Donate extra or unused supplies to local schools, senior centers and/or thrift shops.

  •     SweetPeaPunkinRose Designs donates all extra supplies to local non-profits.

Share creative ways for your customers to use up all of your products

There are numerous sites online that have great ways to re-purpose clothing items.  My wish is that your SweetPeaPunkinRose apron for years to come whether you are cooking, hosting a party, gathering with family and friends around food, or by gifting someone special one of our aprons.
